Hair Loss

Bald Man

Our hair has a certain growth cycle which has three phases namely anagen – new hair starts growing, catagen – transition time whereby the hair stops growing and enters a resting phase, and telogen – resting phase and finally the hair falls out. The cycle continuously repeats itself.

The average person loses between 40 and 100 strands of hair per day which is normal. Hair loss is also referred to as alopecia.

People react differently when their hair starts falling out, but overall people have difficulty accepting hair loss and it has a negative impact upon their self-image. In general baldness is more commonly found amongst men, however women can also suffer from hair loss. Women find it more difficult to accept hair loss when compared to men and they feel fearful, vulnerable and physically less attractive. Women spend more time on their appearance and hair loss can be life altering for them.

Lets have a look at the different types of hair loss

  • Androgenic Alopecia accounts for 95% of all types of hair loss. This is due to genes, hormonal changes and age. There are more hormone receptors where the hair loss has started and thus dihydrotestosterone (DHT) damages the hair follicles. Baldness affects 40 million men and 20 million women each year in America.

  • Alopecia Areata this can happen to any person irrespective of age and gender. The hair just suddenly starts falling out. Alopecia Totalis is the loss of hair on your head and Alopecia Universalis is the loss of hair on the body. There is no inflammation around the bald patches. The immune system erroneously attacks hair follicles and the white blood cells cease the hair growth. No cure has been found for this hair loss but it may start re-growing at a later stage.

  • Postpartum Alopecia this is only temporary hair loss and occurs after pregnancy. During pregnancy the hair growth cycle is disturbed due to hormones. After three to nine months after the birth of the baby a woman might experience extensive hair loss. This can be devastating and traumatic. Usually after a year the normal hair growth continues.

  • Other reasons for hair loss have been linked to dietary deficiencies, stress, and side effects from medication.

  • There are drugs used in the fight against hair loss and these can be purchased over the counter and are nonprescription drugs. Hair transplant is also a viable permanent option, but may be very expensive.
